Alvin J. Potter

Alvin J. Potter

Mr. Alvin J. Potter of Rockford, Michigan, age 89, passed away into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 4, 2015.

He was born on Sunday, April 12, 1925 in Jamestown, Michigan to Peter and Alice Potter. In the 1930’s his family rented and eventually purchased a farm on 6 Mile Road just outside of Cannonsburg, Michigan. He attended Rockford High School but also went to Cass Tech for tool and die training. He was sick at the time of his graduation, defaulting him a diploma causing him to be drafted into WWII; his diploma never caught up with him. His brother, already in the United States Army, had warned him not to enter, so when he got to the end of his entrance physical, a guy slammed a stamp on his paperwork and asked which branch of the military he would like to join. Alvin said he was hoping to go into the Navy. The guy picked up the stamp and said, “What do you know! You got it!” He served from August 1943 to April 1946 aboard the USS Cocopa, a sea-going tug boat. Along with many towing jobs to aid the war effort, they were the first tug boat to sink a submarine. After his honorable discharge he and his brother returned to the farm on 6 Mile to farm and do repair work on vehicles and farm machinery.

In the fifties, Cannonsburg Schools begged him to drive bus for them. He was resistant, but agreed to do it until they found someone else. Thirty-two years later, he retired from driving for the Rockford School System. He also spent many years cleaning the Cannonsburg School. On the farm, he had chickens for eggs, a few cattle for meat, and raised pigs until he could not compete against the pork factories which entered the pork market. He did custom hay bailing and grew corn and hay to help meet the cost of raising a couple of hungry boys.

In October of 1954, he married Ione Johnson and built a house for them on his parent’s farm. They had two boys, Tim and Doug. His wife preceded him in death last February 24, 2014, and he is survived by his sons, Tim and Doug, along with two grandchildren from Doug and his wife Laurie, Jordan and Olivia.

There was a time of visitation from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Pederson Funeral Home, 127 N. Monroe Street NE, Rockford, MI 49341. The funeral service for Alvin was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015, at Pederson Funeral Home. Pastor Matthew Puett officiated.

Because Alvin was a founding member of Faith Bible Church, those wishing to offer expressions of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to Faith Bible Church, 5273 Ramsdell Drive NE, Rockford, MI 49341

Scobey

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our husband, father, Pee paw and mentor Gerald A. Scobey.

We celebrated his life with a mass at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MI at 10 am Saturday on March 7. An open house followed at 4511 Pettis Ave NE, Belmont, MI at 12:30 for friends and family.

For those of you who knew him well will understand the simplicity of these events, for his true wishes were for a pig roast which will take place July 18 at the Belmont address. On February 28 the Lord took a farmer home. He was a bold man who lived by blunt truth. If you could understand the lessons in his gruffness your world was forever seeking more from him. He had a way of understanding people.

He cherished the life lessons his father taught him and passed them on regularly. The most important lesson being how you handled a situation. This was how he measured his respect for others. If he said “he handled that right” or “I’m proud of how she handled it” he was just that.

He was born in Barry County in 1942. At age 14 with his father’s signature he bought his first farm. Farming forever shaped his daily life and was present in the many hats he wore. He was talented at football, golf and like any old farmer could tell a story.

He was known for being detailed and this served him well as a husband, father of 7, grandfather of 14 and in his telecommunications career. He did each of these tasks honorably and with great joy. He journaled everyday and would be the first to tell you “Don’t memorize what you can write down” and “Don’t write down what’s in a manual, read it.” He was loved by his wife, admired by his friends and his children not only adored him but saw him as one of life’s great mentors. He left us all in a cloud of laughter, a smile on our face and as he passed you knew you met a great man. Forever will he be remembered. Forever he will be in our hearts.
