Obituary: June Eloise Platt

June Eloise Platt, treasured by her family and many others, went home to Heaven on May 6 at the age of 91.  June was a brilliant light that shone in every room she entered, and she made friends wherever she went.  She was as sweet as they come, having a way of making everyone around her feel special and loved.  She left a big hole in our lives.  Her spine was fractured and surgery was not an option.  With a serious infection adding even more unbearable pain, the Lord set her free on Sunday morning.  She is now reunited with Bob, her beloved husband of 66 years.

June was connected to Rockford in a way that very few are.  Her grandfather, Harvey Bailey, bought a 200-acre farm in the settlement that became Rockford in 1847.  Her father, Austin Bailey, was born on that farm in 1867 and died there in 1944, never having left it as his residence.  June had beautiful memories of being raised there and lovingly shared them with her family.

June’s family was fortunate to have her very actively involved in their lives, and she will be greatly missed by her 3 children … Carolyn Salisbury of Greenville, Suzanne Dahlstedt of Rockford, and Robert Platt (Anna) of Sparta, her 6 grandchildren … Dena Shotko (Brian), Charles Salisbury (Tracy), Brenda Bolin (Steve), Jason Blakeslee (Rachel), Julie Hoek (Jason), and Brian Platt, and her 11 great-grandchildren … Alek and Blake Shotko, Noah, Abbey, and Marley Salisbury, Mallory and Alex Bolin, Lucas Blakeslee, Austin and Tyler Hoek, and Alina K. Platt.  Besides her husband Robert, June was preceded in death by her parents, Austin and Ella May Bailey.

A celebration of June’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on what would have been her 92nd birthday … Saturday, June 16 … at her longtime place of worship, Grace Evangelical Free Church, 4714 – 13 Mile Road, Rockford, with her pastor, Kevin Reed, officiating.  Friends and family are encouraged to attend.  Donations in June’s memory may be made to the church.

Obituary: Larry David Christiansen

Father, grandfather, friend, and accomplished builder, Larry David Christiansen passed away peacefully after a 20-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis on July 12, 2018.

Unique in all that he did, he was known to those closest to him as LDC. He was born on March 23, 1943 to H. Lawrence Christiansen and M. Jane VanGorder. He spent his childhood in the Grand Rapids area, graduated from Rockford High School in 1961 and attended Hillsdale College and Grand Rapids Community College. He was very athletic, often winning awards in football, wrestling, and track. Growing up, and then as an adult, he and his family enjoyed summers at the cottage on Big Star Lake. He later passed his love of this tradition on to his children when he built his home on Lake Bella Vista. Christiansen Homes, which would become the well-known LDC Inc., started in the mid-70’s. While he was recognized for building and remodeling over a hundred Burger Kings as well as other restaurants across the state of Michigan, his real gift was building distinct and beautiful homes. Although not an architect, Larry was known to draw up his own plans, adding personal touches in all that he did. He often complimented each project with a strategically placed finishing touch in Michigan Blue.

Known for his generosity, he recognized those in need and was always willing to offer a helping hand. Larry also took extreme pride in his children. Uncompromising, he challenged them to be the same in all that they did as well. He enjoyed playing practical jokes on those he loved — such as leaving a live turkey on his sister’s front lawn for Thanksgiving or using fertilizer to emblazon the famous Michigan block M on his Ohio-loving friends’ lawn. His signature look was all his own: Levi’s, flannel shirt, cowboy boots, and his black GMC. He was renowned for his cooking skills and love for U of M football. He loved rock-n-roll and would often be found spending money on the biggest and best stereo or speakers of the day. Rarely was there a time that Bob Seger or the Eagles weren’t rocking the halls of Bella Vista.

Loved ones that cleared the path for him are his parents, his sister Linda Parker, and his son Matthew David whose loss left Larry with a broken heart. Larry is survived by his children, Brett Christiansen (El Dorado Hills, CA) and his children Brittney, Jake, and Carly; His daughter Danielle and Bruce Beals (Grand Haven, MI) and their children Alec, Matthew, and Juliette.

According to his wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of Larry’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harbor Hospice Foundation in honor of his memory at 1050 W Western Ave #400, Muskegon, MI 49441. https://harborhospicemi.org/ways-to-give/donate/. Obituary: Johnathon Mcvain Reagan

Fifty-three years ago, Johnathon Mcvain Reagan was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When he was little he had a severe form of the flu, which almost killed him.  He suffered a fever with a temperature 104.9.

“Lucky me, I made it!” stated John in his journal.  However, he was left with learning difficulties. When John was asked about this how it affected his life, he said “I am mentally challenged, I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I’m still surviving it, but bring it on.”   Despite circumstances, John overcame these physical issues to excel as a musician and student. John started singing the age of only nine months.

John graduated from Sparta High School, played on the school’s football team and acted in school plays.

After high school, John had a difficult time gaining employment, John expressed his experience. “It was only when I came to rest it hit me what a complete mess I had made of my life. That hit me quite hard. We were as skint as you can be without being homeless and at that point I was definitely clinically depressed. I knew it was up to me to change my thinking and it worked. I started working at Fables restaurant on Alpine Avenue.” He told that this was where he met Grandfather Larry Groendyk. The same guy that started with nothing but a vision, a dream. He taught John that in America every thing was possible with hard work. “I heard of his success from locals as Groendyk merged with Eberhards in 1972, making them the largest grocery store chain until 1987.”

As for Sparta, a farm town north of Grand Rapids with 4,200 residents, it’s hard to imagine a less inviting place for a adult with a learning disability. However, John received work at Eberhards, and was promoted to bagging groceries, for the residents of Sparta. He was so appreciative of this change to be productive.

“I loved my job,”  John explained. “It’s not about the pay or job tittle” I was there to serve my community and be the best at whatever position. Titles don’t make the worker, people like me make the business.”

John described how he worked with Larry’s daughter Bonnie, and Scott who is now Gidget.  “Bonnie accepted me as who I was and Gidget expressed my right to be treated with dignity and respect. As she ran for State Senate.”

After living with untrustworthy caregivers, Bonnie invited John to her home.

This was the last part of John’s journal.

It recalls his passion to promote customer service and provide help to the elderly. John knew all the customers by name, always smiling and loved his Burger King Whopper and his daily visit to the Sparta library.
