Mrs. Shirley Maxine Dean of Rockford, Michigan, age 84, passed from this life into eternal life on the evening of Tuesday, May 5, 2015, following a brief illness. She is now resting comfortably in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born to Edwin and Treva Mae (Stout) Hoven on Friday, April 3, 1931, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and had been a lifelong resident of Rockford. Shirley was a highly accomplished woman and a beautiful person, inside and out. She gracefully walked through time, having found more joy, humor, energy, and compassion in life, than most people could ever imagine or strive for. She was a true example of a life well-lived. Many things brought joy to Shirley. She was artistically inclined and incredibly talented, creating the most exquisite paintings and making birdbaths by hand, displaying them in the Grand Rapids ArtPrize, as recently as 2014, and was almost ready for the 2015 event. She was an extremely gifted chef and baker, and a green thumb extraordinaire, growing the most beautiful gardens, flowerbeds, and raspberries. Shirley was also an exceptional hairdresser, practicing for sixty-five years, in and out of her home, always satisfying her clients and friends, and the families she served working for Pederson Funeral Home, were ever-so grateful of her abilities. Shirley was a member of the Rockford Garden Club, the Rogue River Artists’ Association, and as a faithful servant to her Lord, a dedicated and active member of Rockford United Methodist Church. Shirley was a loving and devoted wife, wonderful mother, dear sister and friend, and the best grandmother anyone could ask for. Shirley’s memory will live on through all the people she had ever met, igniting them with her shining personality and kindness; she had never met a stranger and was never judgmental. Her altruism will live on in her community, having served its families in many capacities. May her soul be sadly missed, and her life fondly remembered and celebrated, by her family, friends, and all those who knew her. Shirley is survived by her loving children Greg (Rosemary) Dean, Lori (Patrick) Cavner, and Jeffrey (Jill) Dean; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brothers Max (Lee) and Hugh (Connie) Hoven; sisters Margene Swanson, and Marilyn Stoner; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
